Instadapp wanted to create a fitness wearable similar to WHOOP but they wanted a 10x better user experience. They reached out to us to find UX opportunities & design their app experience.
The team at Instadapp were huge fans of WHOOP. They wear it almost all the time to track their fitness metrics & compete with their teammates.
One thing they loved about the WHOOP app was that they could just open the app & see everything they needed. It had all the necessary details above the fold.

Process
Secondary Research & Knowledge Transfer
The first thing we do when we onboard a client is we try to get to the same level of their knowledge via an in-depth call. We ask relevant questions that help us get an understanding of the product & problem it’s solving.
Next, we dig deep into secondary research via analzing competitors, getting inside communities, and understand what the users are frequently talking about.
Through this process, we get an understanding of the general sentiment, common pains, desires, fears, and wants of our target customers.

Thankfully, the entire Instadapp team uses WHOOP so it was very easy for us to schedule user interviews.

We interviewed a total of 6 users in a span of 2 days to get a lot of insights from them.
The WHOOP is the first thing that they check after waking up.
They don’t take the WHOOP recommendations seriously.
The metrics impact them psychologically.
They started trusting WHOOP because its data was in line with their feelings.
They used WHOOP for two things - monitoring & validating.
Monitoring their recovery or HRV.
Validating if how they feel is actually true.
They do only some sort of day planning based on their WHOOP data.
Users liked the idea of having a peer group you can check in with daily.

These sessions got us to understand two very important conclusions.
Problem 1 - No Unification
The best multiplayer games in the world have the concept of ELO or rating. It is a measure of how you compete with other players. WHOOP was missing this unified metric.Peers used to compete in communities but everyone used to track different metrics so there was no sense of competition.
Problem 2 - Unpersonalized Recommendations
Users across the globe complain about getting ‘impossible’ recommendations from WHOOP. These recommendations are scientifically backed but not personalized to the life of the user.
Users get notified that they need to sleep a whopping 12 hours to fill their sleep debt. It is dreadful for a person to hear this hence no action is taken towards it.
Solution
To solve these two burning problems we brainstormed two effective solutions.

Solution 1 - Unified Score
We introduced the concept of a unified score called Helium Score that all Helium users can compete against. This metric is made out of all the individual scores of a user i.e. recovery, strain, and sleep.
It gives them an overall understanding of their health instead!

Users could start a ‘Helium Project’ to work on any metric they want to improve. They would get a personalized roadmap to reach their goals.
Users can see their project trendline & expected trendlines to steer in the right direction
